How to pack a suit into a suitcase without wrinkles

A suit jacket folded by tucking one shoulder inside the other arrives with a single soft fold that drops out quickly. This guide walks through that fold step by step, jacket first and then pants, and compares it with rolling and flat packing. You will also see where to place the suit in your bag and how to remove wrinkles on arrival.

How do you pack a suit into a suitcase?

Fold the jacket by turning one shoulder inside out and tucking the other into it, so the lining faces out. This method keeps the shoulders in shape and leaves only one fold along the length. For a blazer or a structured jacket, see our guide on how to fold a suit jacket for travel.

  1. Lay the jacket flat, front facing up, buttons undone.
  2. Turn the left shoulder inside out, like a pocket.
  3. Tuck the right shoulder into the inverted left shoulder.
  4. Line up the collar and smooth the sleeves along the body.
  5. Fold the jacket in half across its width, without pressing the fold.
  6. Slip a sheet of tissue paper into the fold to soften it.

Packed flat in a dedicated sleeve, a suit avoids even that fold. The Garbelle weekenders and garment bags work on this principle.

How do you fold suit pants without creases?

Fold the pants along their pressed creases, leg on leg, then in half or in thirds depending on space. Wrap them around the folded jacket or lay them flat on top, so they cushion the jacket fold.

A sheet of tissue paper in each fold prevents sharp marks. Wool pants handle this fold well, while linen marks faster and needs fewer folds.

Should you fold, roll or pack a suit flat?

The shoulder fold suits most trips. Rolling helps in a soft bag, and flat packing works when the suit must be ready to wear on arrival. The choice depends mainly on trip length and the time you have after landing. Bundle wrapping, where the suit wraps around your other clothes without a sharp fold, takes longer to pack.

Where should you place a suit in your bag?

Pack the suit last, on top, where nothing crushes it. Shoes and the toiletry bag go at the bottom, on the handle or wheel side, so they do not weigh on the fabric. For a carry-on, follow our method to pack a suit into a carry-on without wrinkles.

A dry-cleaning plastic bag around the jacket reduces friction between layers of fabric. Avoid overfilling the bag: a compressed suit wrinkles more than a simply folded one.

How do you get wrinkles out of a suit after travel?

Hang the suit as soon as you arrive: most soft folds drop out within a few hours under the weight of the fabric. For a deeper fold, steam from a hot shower usually does the job.

  1. Hang the jacket on a wide hanger, shoulders well seated.
  2. Place the suit in the bathroom with the door closed.
  3. Run a hot shower for about ten minutes.
  4. Let the fabric dry for an hour before wearing it.

Hotels do not always provide enough hangers. The Garbelle foldable travel hanger measures 13.5 × 6.6 × 1.4 cm (5.3 × 2.6 × 0.6 in) folded, weighs 105 g (3.7 oz) and holds up to 15 kg (33 lb).

How can you travel with a suit without folding it?

A bag with a built-in garment sleeve carries the suit flat, with no fold on arrival. The Garbelle carry-on garment duffel, classic model, keeps the suit flat along its full length in 42 liters, for 5 to 7 days. Its isolated shoe compartment keeps a worn pair away from clean shirts. Garbelle carry-on bags fit the cabin limits of more than 150 airlines, subject to each airline's own rules.

For two suits, the Garbelle travel garment bag folds to 50 × 60 cm (19.7 × 23.6 in) and opens to 100 × 60 cm (39.4 × 23.6 in). Its moisture-resistant Oxford fabric and built-in metal hanger hook hold both suits in place without creases. Compare every model on the page for Garbelle weekenders and garment bags.
