A suit jacket folds from the shoulders: one turns inside out, the other tucks into it, and the shape stays intact. This guide covers that fold for a structured jacket and a soft blazer, with variations for the space you have. You will also see how to protect the shoulders and lapels, then reshape the jacket when you arrive.
How do you fold a suit jacket?
Fold a suit jacket by turning one shoulder inside out and tucking the other shoulder into it. The lining ends up on the outside, so the front fabric no longer rubs against the rest of the bag.
- Empty the pockets and fasten the top button.
- Lay the jacket flat, back on the table.
- Turn the left shoulder inside out, as if taking the jacket off.
- Fit the right shoulder into the inverted left shoulder.
- Line up the collar and fold the sleeves along the body.
- Fold in half across the width, without pressing the fold.
Garbelle designs weekenders with a built-in garment sleeve that avoid this fold. For the pants and packing order, follow our guide to packing a suit into a suitcase.
Should you fold a suit jacket in half, in thirds or roll it?
Fold the jacket in half in most cases, because this fold leaves few marks. Folded in thirds or rolled, it takes less space but keeps more traces.
| Fold | Space needed | Marks on arrival | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In half, after the shoulders | Medium | One soft fold | Structured jacket, travel bag |
| In thirds | Low | Two light folds | Compact bag or backpack |
| Rolled | Very low | Light, spread-out wrinkles | Soft blazer without shoulder pads |
How do you fold a blazer for travel?
An unstructured blazer, without shoulder pads or heavy canvas, can be rolled safely. A structured suit jacket should not be rolled, because its shoulder pads would keep the mark of the roll.
- Turn the shoulders first, as for a suit jacket.
- Roll from the collar down, without squeezing.
- Place the roll in the middle of the bag, surrounded by soft clothes.
How do you protect the shoulders and lapels when traveling?
Pad the shoulders and button the jacket before folding it: these two steps keep the shoulders rounded and the lapels aligned.
- Fill the inside of the shoulders with rolled socks or tissue paper.
- Fasten the top button so the lapels do not break.
- Pack the jacket last, on top, inside a dry-cleaning plastic bag.
An overfilled bag crushes the shoulders, even well-padded ones. Leave a little room above the jacket. In a carry-on, follow our guide on packing a suit into a carry-on.
How do you reshape a suit jacket on arrival?
Hang the jacket as soon as you arrive: the soft fold drops out within a few hours under the weight of the fabric. A thin hanger distorts the shoulders, especially on a structured jacket.
The Garbelle foldable travel hanger fits in a pocket once folded, weighs 105 g (3.7 oz) and holds up to 15 kg (33 lb). For a deeper fold, steam from a hot shower does the rest, with the bathroom door closed.
Which bag carries a suit jacket without a center fold?
A bag with a built-in garment sleeve carries the jacket flat, with no fold in the middle. The Garbelle carry-on garment duffel, classic model, keeps the jacket flat along its full length, with 42 liters for 5 to 7 days. Garbelle carry-on bags fit the cabin limits of more than 150 airlines, subject to each airline's own rules.
The rolling model offers the same sleeve and the same 42 liters, with wheels and a retractable handle. Compare both models on the page for Garbelle weekenders and garment bags.
